The biggest challenge faced by today’s men is getting out of their comfort zone. Once they achieve a certain level of success, they don’t know how to move upwards. That’s when it hits – the need to create a change. But the time to move is now. Whenever you’re stuck at a good level of success, the only way to reach greater heights is to push yourself out of the conventions and lead not just change, but a disruptive change.

Bipul Banerjee is a business development professional who has contributed to multiple domains within the medical niche, including biotechnology life science, diagnostics, medical devices, laboratory equipment, nutrigenomics disinfectants, and sterilizers bio-fertilizers, just to name a few. Currently, he is leading JSM Innovations LLP as Vice President, where his disruptive leadership skills are responsible for guiding a team of 300 individuals.

From a Humble Medical Representative to a Leader

Bipul Banerjee has had a humble background. A fierce academic while growing up, he was inspired by his high school voice teacher. A visually impaired speech pathologist, she told Bipul Banerjee that “Success Comes in CANS and failures Come in CAN’TS!”

Heavily inspired by those words, he began his professional journey after becoming a science graduate. At first, he started out as a medical representative, but his knack for perfection, lateral thinking, and risk-taking took him quickly up the corporate ladder. During this time, he also acquired MBA from BK School of Management and a Pre-PHD in marketing.

As his potential unlocked, he transformed from a sales rep to a frontline manager. His exposure further pushed him out of the box and to the middle management position. And from there, he achieved leadership positions.

However, the road to becoming a leader was not without lessons. He faced his greatest challenge in the early days of his career: working in a foreign land with a work-life, work ethics, and culture different from his own forced Bipul Banerjee out of his comfort zone.

Along with his responsibilities, he was told to lead a team whose members were twice as old as him. The difference between ideologies and processes could have put Bipul Banerjee in an adversarial position at this stage of his life. But he didn’t let that happen. Instead, he embraced disruption.

He went straight in and learned about the culture and the customs to gain valuable insights and ideologies from those working under him. Inspired by Robert K Greenleaf’s essay about “Servant Leadership,” he decided to serve his team by lending them a patient ear. As he listened, his perspectives grew. Here, he also learned the value of empathy and how that can bring a positive change to leadership.
